Your doctor will explain if they would like to order some tests.
These might include:
  1. Blood tests – to check your blood levels, immune system and how your organs are working.
  2. Images of the chest or body – see below for different types of scans that may be requested.
  3. Lung function tests – also known as ‘Spirometry‘ – see below for a video of how this is performed.
  4. A heart scan – also known as an ‘Echocardiogram‘ – a scan to see how well the heart is pumping.
  5. A sputum sample – you will be asked to cough up sputum (phlegm) and this will be sent to the lab to see if there are any ‘bugs’ in it.
  6. Other specialist tests – there are lots more tests that doctors may arrange which aren’t covered here. Your doctor will explain if you need a different type of test.

Remember it’s your right to know how and why a test is being done. If you have any questions or concerns then don’t be afraid of talking to your doctor.

Images of the chest

Different scans are requested because they show different parts of the body. Your scan technician will explain how each test is performed. You must always tell your doctor is you are pregnant, breastfeeding or if you have any allergies.
